DERMAPLANING

Including an Obagi Mini Facial

Dermaplaning is a safe highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. Our Dermaplaning treatment includes Obagi products to deeply cleanse & hydrate the skin before using a surgical scalpel to gently shave the skin’s surface. This removes the top-most layer of dead skin as well as the “peach fuzz”. You are guaranteed to leave the clinic with a smooth, glowing complexion. There is no downtime with this treatment. We advise no makeup to be worn for the rest of the day.

Menu

  • Does it hurt?

The needle just pierces the surface of the skin to allow the hydration treatment to penetrate deeper into the dermis.  You may peel some pinpricks but it is not an uncomfortable treatment.

  • What is used to perform derma planing?

A sterile surgical blade held at a 45 degree angle.

  • What is removed from the skin?

Keratinized cells on the outer stratum corneum and fine vellus hair.

  • Is Derma Planing safe?

It is an extremely safe and effective treatment.

  • What is Vellus hair?

Vellus hair, also referred to a peach fuzz or baby hair, it is translucent in appearance and unmistakably thinner than terminal hair.  Vellus hairs may seem unnecessary, yet they serve a useful purpose.  They regulate your body temperature and help sweat evaporate from your body.

Body hair undergoes various changes as we become older.  Vellus hair is replaced with thicker hair in certain areas of your body during puberty.  When this transition occurs, vellus hairs become terminal hairs. The structure of terminal hair is different from that of vellus hair.  It is stronger, longer, and more noticeable.  This changeover results from an increased production of a hormone called androgen. Androgen is natural to males and females, but males have a higher level.  Therefore, men typically have more terminal hairs than females.

The amount of vellus hair on an adult varies from person to person.  Due to genetics, some people maintain a larger amount of these tiny hairs after puberty.  Some conditions do spur vellus hair growth.

Once the vellus hair is removed will it grow back thicker?

No, this is physiologically impossible.  The soft, fine vellous hair will grow back slowly – usually 2-3 weeks.

  • Where can you NOT dermaplane?

Eyelids or too close to the eye area.  Caution must be given around the nose and mouth area.

  • How often can I have dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning can be performed every 3-4 weeks.  Treating the skin in this manner removes approximately 2 to 3 weeks worth of dead skin cells.  We need to allow the skin to complete its normal skin cycle before repeating the treatment in order to prevent interruption of the natural skin cycle.

  • Active Acne

If you have active acne, you cannot be treated until the lesions have healed.

  • Is Derma Planing good for acne scarring?

Yes it’s great for diminishing acne scars but should not be performed during active outbreaks.

  • What to expect after the treatment.

Straight after your treatment the skin will feel smooth, soft and sometimes tingle slightly.  Skin will be more sensitive following this treatment and therefore it is essential you wear a minimum SPF50 on your skin post treatment, regardless of the weather.

Dermaplaning can cause some skin types to have a minimal break out post treatment, this is often due to the removal of dead skin cells, the skin might feel more dry than normal due to the removal of excess sebum, you can use appropriate moisturiser for your skin type.

  • What to avoid.

Discourage excessive touching to prevent dirt and oil entering the stratum corneum.

Avoid make up for a minimum of 24 hours

(the benefits of the dermaplane will diminish quicker if aftercare advise is not followed).
