Microsclerotherapy

MICROSCLEROTHERAPY TO REDUCE THREAD VEINS

Even if you have thread veins, you may not know what they are or what causes them. Also known as telangiectasia or spider veins, this condition occurs when a number of capillaries rupture and create a red or blue tree-like pattern just under the skin by spreading blood to other capillaries. Although they can occur nearly anywhere on the body, they are most commonly found on the legs.

WHAT EXACTLY IS MICROSCLEROTHERAPY?

During microsclerotherapy, we use a fine needle to inject a sclerosing drug that will cause the walls of the capillaries to stick together so the blood will stop flowing through them. That blood is then reabsorbed by the body and redirected into deeper veins over the course of a couple weeks.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MICROSCLEROTHERAPY TREATMENTS

What to expect before the procedure

● Dr Michael Szypulski will perform a physical exam and review your medical history in order to assess if you’re a suitable candidate for sclerotherapy.
● We may perform an ultrasound scan in order to identify the site of venous disease.
● You should supply us with a list of all your current medications and continue or discontinue with them according to our instructions before the procedure.
● Refrain from using oils or lotions, and do not shave the legs before the procedure if the leg is the site of venous disease.

What to expect during the procedure

● Dr Michael uses Fibrovein, a leading sclerosing irritating solution in the UK, for the procedure.
● We will clean the skin on the target vein before injecting solution into the vein using a fine needle.
● The vein will collapse and get scarred.
● This step redirects blood to flow into healthier veins. The scarred veins are eventually reabsorbed.
● Multiple thread veins may call for multiple treatments.

What to expect after the procedure

● You should not take anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen, for at least two days.
● Plan to avoid hot baths or using hot compress, as well as saunas, whirlpools, and direct sunlight for at least 48 hours.
● We encourage you to walk to promote healing.
● Aerobic activities, including running or lifting heavy objects, should not be done for some days.
● Be sure to contact us if you notice sudden swelling, ulceration on the affected area, or inflammation around the groin.

Risks and complications

● You may experience mild, temporary side effects such as itching for 1- 2 days
● There may be redness and bruising at the site that should resolve within weeks.
● The injection site may develop brown lines or spots.
● New, smaller blood vessels may form but they should go away.
● Severe side effects are rare. They include allergic reactions to the solution injected, blood clots, and ulceration at the site of injection.
